2024 Spring Planting

May 18 @ 7:30 am - 1:00 pm

The city of Cheyenne is currently facing issues of a canopy that has not been established and an ageing canopy that is shrinking due to high tree mortality caused by insect infestations, extreme weather events, and trees coming to the end of their lives.  Unfortunately, trees that are dying are not being replaced causing large gaps in our tree canopy.   Tree Equity means investing in communities with the most need by growing trees, creating jobs and implementing just policies. Specifically in Cheyenne, some neighborhoods need a little more help than others so each year we focus on neighborhoods that have low tree equity scores and need the additional assistance.  This Spring we have targeted the Sun Valley, Saddle Ridge, Dakota Crossing, and JL Ranch neighborhoods. Planting days like this one increases tree equity by supplying more trees that Cheyenne residents can gain health, economic, and climate benefits from. These free trees are made possible by American Forests and funded by Microsoft. More about Tree Equity can be found at Americanforests.org/our-programs/tree-equity and treeequityscore.org.

Join us for our Spring 2024 Planting Day on May 18th!  This planting event will take us over 1,500 trees planted in Chyenne since 2017.

Our tree planting depends on volunteers – no prior experience required!  As a planting day volunteer, we will ask you to join us at the Cheyenne Urban Forestry Shop at 7:30 am.  Wear weather appropriate clothing including close-toed shoes. We suggest dressing in layers as it is usually chilly in the morning but warms up quickly.  Water bottles, gloves, sunscreen, and ear plugs will be available at the shop for your use. When you arrive, we ask that you park on the west side of the lot and enter through the south entrance of the building.

Upon entering you will be asked to sign in, given your t-shirt, safety vest, and directed to the center bay of the shop.  Feel free to grab coffee, breakfast and introduce yourself to the other volunteers.  There will be a short welcome and safety overview.  Crew leaders will be introduced, and you will be asked to split into even planting groups under each crew leader.  Each planting group will be led by a crew leader and a Rooted in Cheyenne board member or Cheyenne Urban Forestry crew member.  Each planting group will leave the forestry shop and head to their first planting site – we request that groups carpool as much as possible.  You will be guided on the proper way to plant the trees at each planting site.  Crews will plant 8-10 trees and then return to the Cheyenne Urban Forestry Shop to enjoy lunch.

Freedom’s Edge Brewing Company graciously offers all planting volunteers a free 10 oz. pour of beer to enjoy on the day of planting. We hope see you after planting to enjoy a cold local craft beer!

If you want to volunteer but are unable to plant trees, please contact us at (307) 637-6428 or use our contact page.  We have a few different ways you can help.
